New Delhi: The quartet of fuels that constitute the lion’s share in India’s oil basket — petrol, diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) — have seen an impressive growth in May, Petroleum and Planning Analysis Cell’s (PPAC) data showed. Supported by summer travel, growth in air travel and policies such as Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), fuel consumption in India traced a healthy growth trajectory in May.
According to PPAC data, petrol consumption in May this year stood at 3,767 Thousand Metric Tonnes (TMT), which was 8.77 percent higher than May 2024. “#Petrol has continued to surprise with its handsome growth after a slower start in April. Petrol consumption grew by 8.77 percent over the same month last year. #Travel spree which started as revenge tourism post-covid is not slowing down. In fact, Indians are now increasingly following their western counterparts and holiday travelling is catching up beyond pilgrims,” said Dr Pankaj Sharma, Additional Director at PPAC in a post on social media.
Diesel consumption, on the other hand, grew 1.89 percent in May year-on-year, settling at 8,571 TMT. In India, diesel is primarily consumed in the transport sector (including trucks, buses, railways and commercial vehicles), and in agriculture. An increase in diesel consumption is directly linked to the growth of the economy. The fuel also claims over 40 percent share in India’s basket of refined petroleum products.
India’s LPG consumption witnessed a growth of 13.43 percent in May in comparison to May 2024 as it settled at 2,792 TMT as opposed to 2,461 TMT a year ago. The demand is being driven by both domestic and industrial segments and policies like PMUY. According to government data, active domestic LPG connections stood at 32.97 crore in April this year, up from 32.42 crore connections on record in 2024-25. PMUY connections stood at 10.33 crore in April 2025.
Jet fuel saw a modest growth in May at 4.30 percent in comparison to the last year as 775 TMT was consumed as opposed to 744 TMT (May 2024). It must be mentioned that air travel was restricted in May as flights were suspended due to Operation Sindoor.
