New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has signed a Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreement with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the development of a high-capacity cross-border power transmission system.
The agreement has been signed in the presence of Kulman Ghising, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal, and Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of India. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), Government of India, Dr RK Tyagi, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Power Grid, and Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi, Director (Personnel), Power Grid, were also present on the occasion.
The cross-border transmission system projects include the development of the Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) transmission link and the Lamki (Dododhara) (Nepal)–Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) transmission link. Once operational, these projects are expected to significantly boost electricity exchange between India and Nepal, strengthen regional energy security, enhance grid resilience, and contribute to sustained economic growth in both nations.
As of October 15, Power Grid operates 287 substations and over 1,80,864 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, with a total transformation capacity of 5,81,831 MVA. Leveraging advanced technologies, automation, and digital solutions, Power Grid has maintained an impressive average transmission system availability of 99.83 percent.
