New Delhi: State-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (Power Grid) reported an 8.4 percent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 3,866.16 crore for the September quarter of FY27, even as revenue growth remained relatively modest, highlighting the difference between the company’s earnings performance and expansion in its core business.
The country’s leading power transmission utility had reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 3,566.08 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
Revenue from operations increased 2.97 percent to Rs 11,816.22 crore from Rs 11,475.95 crore a year earlier, according to the company’s unaudited financial results approved by its board on November 1.
Total income, including other income, rose 3.3 percent to Rs 12,055.11 crore from Rs 11,670.24 crore.
The results indicate that Power Grid’s profit growth outpaced the expansion in its operating revenue, making the composition of earnings and the pace of commissioning new transmission assets important factors in assessing its financial performance.
Power Grid’s consolidated profit before tax increased 17.8 percent to Rs 4,568.44 crore from Rs 3,878.17 crore in the year-ago quarter.
On a sequential basis, however, profit before tax declined marginally from Rs 4,587.32 crore in the June quarter.
Consolidated net profit increased 7.4 percent sequentially from Rs 3,598.42 crore in Q1 FY27, while revenue from operations grew 2.8 percent.
The figures suggest that the improvement in profitability was not driven by revenue growth alone. However, the relative contribution of operating efficiencies, tax movements, regulatory adjustments and other accounting factors requires closer examination.
For the first six months of FY27, consolidated revenue from operations increased approximately 2.8 percent to Rs 23,312.94 crore, while net profit rose 3.7 percent to Rs 7,464.58 crore.
The half-year performance points to a more moderate earnings trajectory than the stronger growth reported in the September quarter.
Beyond quarterly profitability, Power Grid’s capital investment programme remains a significant indicator of its operational expansion.
The company reported consolidated capital expenditure of Rs 16,864 crore during the first half of FY27, reflecting continued investment in transmission infrastructure.
However, assets worth Rs 9,300 crore were capitalised during the same period, excluding foreign exchange rate variation and including assets capitalised as finance leases.
The difference between capital expenditure and capitalisation is significant because spending on projects under construction does not automatically translate into additional revenue-generating transmission assets.
For investors, the pace at which ongoing projects are completed, commissioned and brought under applicable tariff arrangements will be an important determinant of future earnings growth.
Power Grid’s consolidated gross fixed assets, including gross lease receivables, stood at Rs 3,29,852 crore as of September 30, 2026.
In a separate corporate development, Power Grid’s board approved the divestment of its entire equity stake in Central Transmission Utility of India Ltd (CTUIL) to Grid Controller of India Ltd.
The decision follows an in-principle approval granted in March 2026.
The company has also disclosed progress towards exiting investments in certain joint ventures, including Torrent Power Grid Ltd, Sikkim Power Transmission Ltd and Parbati Koldam Transmission Company Ltd.
According to the financial statement disclosures, approval from the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), through the Ministry of Power, was received during the September quarter for the proposed exits.
These developments form part of Power Grid’s ongoing restructuring of its investment portfolio and subsidiary holdings.
At the end of September 2026, Power Grid and its subsidiaries operated 1,87,576 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, 293 substations and transformation capacity of 6,49,116 MVA.
The company reported average transmission system availability of 99.81 percent during the first half of FY27.
The high availability level indicates operational reliability across its transmission network, although system availability and financial returns measure different aspects of performance.
As India’s electricity demand and renewable energy integration requirements increase, Power Grid’s ability to expand transmission capacity while maintaining system reliability will remain central to its long-term business prospects.
Power Grid’s board also approved its first interim dividend of Rs 3 per equity share with a face value of Rs 10 for FY27.
The dividend represents 30 percent of the equity share’s face value.
The company has fixed November 6, 2026, as the record date to determine eligible shareholders, while payment is scheduled for November 30.
The dividend announcement comes as Power Grid continues to balance shareholder distributions with its capital-intensive transmission expansion programme.
Power Grid’s September-quarter performance presents a mixed picture of modest operating revenue growth, stronger quarterly profitability and substantial infrastructure investment.
While the 8.4 percent increase in net profit reflects improved reported earnings, the slower pace of revenue expansion suggests that sustained growth will depend on timely commissioning of new transmission projects and their conversion into revenue-generating assets.
The company’s Rs 16,864 crore capital expenditure during the first half demonstrates the scale of its investment programme. The more consequential financial measure, however, will be how efficiently this spending translates into commissioned assets, regulated transmission income and returns on capital.
With significant investment already underway, project execution, tariff recognition, financing costs and capitalisation trends are likely to remain key factors shaping Power Grid’s earnings trajectory in the coming quarters.
