The facility, with an annual capacity to manufacture about one million smart and prepaid meters, is expected to commence production in October 2025. The initiative is aimed at making India self-reliant in gas meter manufacturing while enhancing IGL’s ability to deliver efficient, affordable, and technology-driven services to its customers.

Applauding IGL’s contribution to India’s city gas distribution sector, Puri pointed out that the company now operates 956 CNG stations, around 12 percent of the national total, fuelling 22 lakh vehicles daily, and has connected over 30.7 lakh households with piped natural gas. Additionally, it supplies 9.3 MMSCMD of natural gas to 5,300 industries and 7,100 commercial establishments. He also noted IGL’s rural outreach, with PNG connections extended to 250 villages in Delhi, benefiting over one lakh rural households.

The Minister highlighted that 25 lakh new LPG connections were distributed under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana on the first day of Navratri, taking total connections under the scheme to 10.6 crore. He also referred to recent positive exploration results in the Andaman region, underlining India’s strong geological potential.

Emphasising the importance of innovation, Puri lauded IGL’s adoption of advanced digital technologies including SAP-ERP, GIS, analytics dashboards, automated meter reading, and e-billing solutions, which he said set benchmarks in the city gas distribution sector. He also noted IGL’s foray into EV charging infrastructure, with facilities already installed at 40 stations and plans for further expansion.

Congratulating IGL, the Minister said the new office represents not just infrastructure expansion but a reaffirmation of its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and advancing India’s clean energy transition.
