New Delhi: RITES Limited has expanded its global railway export footprint, particularly across Southern Africa, through the successful delivery of advanced rolling stock and the securing of new international orders.
The company achieved a key milestone in Mozambique by completing the supply of 10 Cape Gauge diesel-electric locomotives (3,300 HP) to national rail operator Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique. The final consignment reached Maputo Port on April 16, marking the completion of the logistics phase of a contract signed in December 2023.

Manufactured at Banaras Locomotive Works, the locomotives are designed for Cape Gauge (1,067 mm) networks and built to operate in demanding conditions. They are equipped with AC-AC traction systems, microprocessor-based controls, remote monitoring, fault diagnostics, and advanced braking systems, enhancing both operational efficiency and crew comfort on long-haul routes.
The project is notable for its engineering complexity, given that India’s manufacturing ecosystem is primarily oriented towards broad gauge systems. It required design adaptation, specialised engineering, vendor coordination, and integrated logistics management, underscoring India’s capability to deliver end-to-end railway export solutions.
The Mozambique project also builds on RITES’ longstanding association with CFM, which includes earlier supplies of passenger coaches and locomotives. With nearly one-third of CFM’s locomotive fleet now sourced from India, the latest delivery further deepens bilateral cooperation in rail infrastructure development.
Beyond Mozambique, RITES has secured additional contracts in the region. In South Africa, orders from Talis Group and Ndalama Group involve customised 3,100 HP Cape Gauge locomotives tailored to local operational requirements. In Zimbabwe, a contract from Berhard Group marks the company’s entry into another key rail network.

Further reinforcing its presence in Mozambique, RITES has also received a repeat order from International Coal Ventures Limited for the supply of five additional locomotives, signalling sustained demand and long-term confidence in its offerings.
These developments reflect RITES’ growing role in strengthening rail-based logistics, trade connectivity, and infrastructure modernisation across Africa. They also highlight India’s emergence as a reliable global partner in delivering cost-effective, customised, and technology-driven railway solutions aligned with international standards.
