SAIL Q2 profit surges 318% to Rs 1,750 crore as revenue growth outpaces costs

Steel Maharatna PSU SAIL reports nearly 20 percent revenue growth and higher sales in September quarter

New Delhi: State-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has reported a sharp recovery in profitability, with consolidated net profit jumping 318 percent year-on-year to Rs 1,750.47 crore in the September quarter of FY27, supported by higher revenues and improved operating performance.

The country's largest public sector steel producer had posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 418.72 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.

Revenue from operations rose 19.82 percent to Rs 31,997.55 crore during July-September 2026, compared with Rs 26,704.17 crore a year earlier, according to the company's reported quarterly financial results.

The earnings improvement is significant because SAIL's profit expanded much faster than its revenue, indicating stronger profitability during the quarter.

Revenue growth outpaces expenditure

SAIL's total expenses increased 14.55 percent to Rs 29,913.65 crore from Rs 26,113.64 crore in the year-ago period.

While expenditure increased by approximately Rs 3,800 crore, revenue grew by about Rs 5,293 crore, providing a substantial cushion to earnings.

The company's consolidated net profit margin consequently improved to approximately 5.47 percent from 1.57 percent a year earlier.

The improvement suggests that higher business volumes and better cost absorption helped strengthen SAIL's financial performance, although the headline figures alone do not establish the contribution of steel prices, raw material costs or exceptional items.

Record production and higher-value steel support growth

The financial turnaround comes against the backdrop of SAIL's strongest-ever first-half production performance.

According to an October 5 company statement, SAIL produced 10.2 million tonnes of hot metal, 9.6 million tonnes of crude steel and 8.39 million tonnes of finished steel during April-September 2026.

These represented year-on-year increases of 2 percent, 1 percent and 1 percent, respectively.

More significantly, production of high-end steel rose 30 percent to approximately 2 million tonnes, reflecting the company's growing emphasis on higher-value products.

The share of finished steel in total saleable steel production improved to 89.2 percent from 86.8 percent in the corresponding period last year.

These operational improvements are important for SAIL because a stronger product mix and better capacity utilisation can support profitability even when overall production growth remains modest.

Steel sales rise as SAIL reduces borrowings

SAIL's reported standalone operational figures show that steel sales reached 5.16 million tonnes during the September quarter, an increase of 5 percent year-on-year and 24 percent over the preceding quarter.

Standalone profit after tax stood at Rs 1,774 crore, while EBITDA reached Rs 4,561 crore. The company also reported a reduction in borrowings to Rs 20,583 crore, suggesting progress in strengthening its balance sheet.

The distinction between standalone and consolidated earnings is important: the Rs 1,750.47-crore headline profit represents consolidated performance, while the operational figures and Rs 1,774-crore profit relate to SAIL's standalone business.

Earlier this month, SAIL had also reported improvements in energy efficiency, inventory management and raw material operations during the first half of FY27.

Iron ore production increased 13 percent year-on-year, while iron ore sales surged 190 percent to 2.671 million tonnes during April-September.

The company also reported a reduction of approximately Rs 1,080 crore in borrowings during the first six months of the financial year.

Can SAIL sustain the profit recovery?

The sharp improvement in quarterly earnings offers encouragement for the Maharatna steelmaker, but sustaining the momentum will depend on domestic steel demand, pricing conditions, raw material costs and continued operating efficiency.

SAIL's increased focus on value-added steel could help improve its earnings profile, particularly as the company seeks to strengthen its position in higher-margin segments.

However, the relatively modest growth in crude steel production compared with the substantial increase in profit also underlines the importance of examining whether the improvement is driven by sustainable operating gains or favourable market conditions.

SAIL, which operates under the Ministry of Steel, has an annual steelmaking capacity exceeding 20 million tonnes and remains a major supplier to India's infrastructure, construction, railway and industrial sectors.

Source verification: The consolidated financial figures were corroborated against October 27 reporting, while production and efficiency data were checked against SAIL's official October 5 release. SAIL's investor-relations pages and exchange-announcement listings were also examined, but the complete October 27 exchange filing was not independently retrievable. Accordingly, detailed claims about the drivers of profitability have been qualified rather than presented as established facts.
