New Delhi: The New Plate Mill of SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has implemented an innovative emissivity coating in its reheating furnace, marking a significant step forward in sustainable steel manufacturing and operational efficiency. The initiative, the first of its kind at RSP, was funded under the KfW Environmental Improvement Programme and executed during a scheduled capital repair.
The advanced coating enhances the furnace’s thermal performance by improving heat absorption and re-radiation from refractory surfaces. According to RSP, the technology is expected to reduce Specific Heat Consumption by about 5 percent, resulting in substantial fuel cost savings and a measurable reduction in CO₂ and NOₓ emissions. The project was completed at a cost of Rs 23.5 lakh.
Beyond fuel efficiency, the coating ensures uniform heat distribution inside the furnace, improving the quality and consistency of reheated slabs — a key factor in achieving higher-grade plate production in downstream processes. The reduced thermal stress also extends the life of furnace refractories, increasing equipment availability and reducing maintenance needs.
RSP said the initiative strengthens its ongoing efforts to lower its carbon footprint and adopt cleaner, more sustainable production practices. The long-term benefits span the entire value chain, from enhanced furnace reliability and lower operational costs to improved product quality and stronger sustainability credentials.
The project was executed under the close monitoring of Nilamani Mohapatra, Head of Section, NPM (Operation), and the guidance of R.K. Muduli, Chief General Manager (NPM, SPP & Digitalisation), reflecting the unit’s focus on technological advancement and environmental responsibility.
