In October 2024, SECL’s coal grade confirmation stood at 65 percent, based on a total of 4,855 samples. Recognizing the scope for improvement, the company implemented various measures to strengthen coal storage, dispatch mechanisms, and the sampling process. Close monitoring of the sampling process and the issuance of necessary guidelines were key strategies that helped streamline the procedure.

By January 2025, SECL’s laboratory testing confirmed that coal grade confirmation had risen to 83 percent, marking the highest quality recorded in the last five years. The company’s focus on its mega projects yielded remarkable results, with coal grade confirmation in Dipka and Kusmunda improving from 38.74 percent and 72.47 percent in October 2024 to over 90 percent by January 2025. This improvement alone led to a financial benefit of approximately Rs 17 crore for SECL’s Gevra, Dipka, and Kusmunda mega projects.

SECL’s sustained efforts have not only resulted in financial gains but have also bolstered consumer confidence. The enhanced coal grade confirmation has reinforced the company’s credibility and operational efficiency. SECL remains committed to further strengthening its coal quality management processes, ensuring the supply of high-quality coal to consumers while optimizing overall performance and sustainability.
