SECL registers 44% growth in coal production in July 2023

Apart from registering 44 percent growth in coal production, Bilaspur-based coal miner has recorded its highest-ever coal dispatch in the month, since inception

New Delhi: South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has registered a growth of 43.7 percent in the production in July compared to the output achieved in the corresponding period of last fiscal.

The Bilaspur-based subsidiary of state-run Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 13.1 million tonnes (MT) of coal in the month of July 2023. The output is 43.7 percent higher compared to 9.1 MT coal produced by the company in the month of July 2022.

The cumulative production of the company till July 2023 also grew by 22.3 per cent to 54.8 MT. During the period April to July in 2022, SECL has produced 44.8 MT of coal.

SECL’s coal offtake also increased by 24.4 percent in the month of July 2023. Compared to previous year’s 11.8 MT, SECL reported an offtake of 14.6 MT last month. The cumulative off take in the first four months of the current fiscal was 59.0 MT, which is 15.3 percent higher compared to 51.2 MT offtake during the corresponding period of previous year.

In the month of July, SECL has achieved 50 MT of coal dispatch so far in the financial year 2023-24 (FY’24). It was the fastest ever dispatch of 50 MT since the inception of the company, the SECL spokesperson had said. Last year the company had dispatched around 44 million tonnes of coal in during the corresponding period thus registering a growth of 13 percent in this financial year.

Of the above, 40 MT of coal has been dispatched to the power sector. Record amount of coal was supplied to the power plants during the summer season, due to which adequate availability of coal has been ensured in the power plants.

It may be noted that the company has recorded the highest ever coal production of 167 MT in the last financial year 22-23. The company has got a target of 200 MT of coal production for this year.
