Steel Ministry invites R&D proposals under National Green Hydrogen Mission

New Delhi: The Ministry of Steel issued a notice on May 31 stating that it is inviting proposals for research and development under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Further, the Ministry highlighted that it is seeking proposals for setting up pilot plants for the production and utilisation of hydrogen in the iron and steel-making processes. The notice also noted that the government has allocated Rs 455 crores for the steel sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.

The Ministry also emphasised that the use of hydrogen in DRI making and blast furnaces has technical and economic challenges. Therefore, the Ministry is inviting R&D proposals on selected themes like hydrogen-based DRI, redesigning of EAF where hydrogen-based DRI can be used, adaptation of existing DRI plants, design, technology and machinery modification if hydrogen needs to be used in blast furnace. In addition, the Ministry also said that the funding for initiatives can be provided from the allocated budget in the steel sector.

The Steel Ministry also notified that an indicative budget/financial support can be provided to help design an appropriate scheme for the sector under the Green Hydrogen Mission.
