New Delhi: THDC India Limited (THDC) has successfully synchronized the first unit (250 MW) of the country's first Variable Speed 1000 MW Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri to the national grid in Pump Condenser Mode. The synchronization, which took place on April 23, 2025, marks a major technological and operational milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen its clean energy infrastructure.
Announcing the achievement, THDC Chairman and Managing Director RK Vishnoi termed the successful synchronization as a “historic moment” and a “novel benchmark” for India’s hydropower sector. The event signifies a critical leap in enhancing grid stability and optimizing renewable energy usage. During the synchronization, the unit operated satisfactorily, drawing approximately 4 MW and 13.6 Mvar for about 10 minutes in Pump Condenser Mode.
“This milestone is a testimony to our unwavering commitment to bolstering India’s renewable energy capabilities,” said Vishnoi. “It brings the Tehri Hydro Power Complex closer to full operationalization, with a cumulative installed capacity of 2,400 MW. The Tehri PSP will serve as a backbone for grid stability by converting surplus off-peak energy into peaking power, ensuring reliable electricity supply to millions.”
With a design capacity of 1000 MW, the Tehri PSP is set to play a pivotal role in balancing the Northern Grid, especially during periods of high electricity demand. It is expected to be instrumental in supporting India’s transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
Other members of THDC's leadership also extended their congratulations to the project team. THDC Director (Personnel) Shallinder Singh hailed the achievement as a significant chapter in India’s renewable journey and reaffirmed THDC’s role in driving sustainable energy solutions. THDC Director (Technical) Bhupender Gupta praised the team's innovative approach, calling the synchronization a “benchmark for hydroelectric projects in India.” THDC Director (Finance) Sipan Kumar Garg emphasized the strategic importance of the project in fortifying India’s energy infrastructure.
The synchronization event was attended by senior THDC officials including THDC Executive Director (Tehri Complex) LP Joshi, THDC CGM/EIC (PSP) AR Gairola, THDC AGM-Incharge (EM&HM PSP) SK Sahoo and representatives from GEPIL and THDC’s consultant Tractebel.
