Third unit of India's 1st variable-speed PSP project in Tehri begins commercial operations: Power Ministry

The Power Ministry has announced COD of the 250 MW third unit of India’s first variable-speed pumped storage project at Tehri

New Delhi: The Ministry of Power on Tuesday announced the commencement of commercial operations of the 250 MW third unit of the 1,000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), marking another milestone in India’s first variable-speed PSP project. The ministry said the COD was commenced virtually from New Delhi by Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who stressed the strategic importance of pumped storage systems for grid stability, flexible power supply and renewable energy (RE) integration.

“Today, I officially commenced the Commercial Operation Date (COD) process of the 3rd Unit (250 MW) of the 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand. This landmark achievement marks India’s first Variable Speed PSP and strengthens our clean energy transition, supporting the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” the minister said. He emphasised the critical role of PSPs in ensuring reliable power supply and system stability as renewable penetration grows.

Ministry highlights PSP’s growing role in energy transition

Minister of State for Power Shripad Y Naik underlined THDC India Ltd’s leadership in pumped storage development and its contribution to energy security. Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal also congratulated the company for commissioning major projects this year.

The ministry said the Tehri project sets a benchmark in variable-speed technology and round-trip efficiency, reinforcing THDCIL’s position in advanced hydropower.

The event was also attended by CEA Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad, NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh, THDCIL CMD Sipan Kumar Garg and other senior officials.
