Congress clears the air on Rahul Gandhi’s resignation

Senior Congress leader Randeep Surjewala clearly stated that the CWC was unanimous in its decision to reject Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s offer to resign

New Delhi: After being met with a drubbing in the recently concluded 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress has now stepped out to clear the air on rumours about president Rahul Gandhi's resignation and has said that he will continue to be the party chief. Addressing the media after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet, senior leader Randeep Surjewala clearly stated that the body was unanimous in its decision to reject Gandhi's offer to resign.

Surjewala said that the party will fulfil its role of a strong Opposition.

Rahul is in, but the party will be restructured

"We need Rahul Gandhi to guide us in these challenging times," Surjewala told media persons. He also said that Congress has humbly accepted the people's mandate and will continue to work for the welfare of the nation.

At the CWC meet, Congress leaders also passed a resolution authorising Gandhi to restructure the party.

Congress downplays its poor performance in the polls

Commenting on the party's performance in the elections, senior party leader AK Antony said, "I don't agree that this was a disastrous performance but we were not able to rise to the expectation. We can't reach a conclusion at such short notice."

UP, Odisha state chiefs resign

Following the rout in the 2019 elections, Congress' Uttar Pradesh and Odisha state chiefs and its campaign committee head in Karnataka have resigned, taking full responsibility for the crushing defeat. Congress' Amethi district chief, Yogendra Misra, has also put in his papers after Gandhi lost the Congress's ancient stronghold to BJP's Smriti Irani.
