New Delhi: On a day when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the course to storm back to the Parliament with an even bigger majority, Narendra Modi said that the victory did not belong to Modi, it belonged to India. Addressing party workers, Modi said that in the coming days, "every minute of my life will be dedicated to the nation and its people."
At the time of filing this report, the latest tally from the Election Commission of India (ECI) showed that BJP was leading in 300 seats while the Congress was trailing behind with 50.
While the party is headed for a clean sweep in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi, it has also emerged victorious in Uttar Pradesh, where the Opposition SP-BSP alliance posed a tough fight.
The party did not just sweep through the Hindi heartland and Gujarat, but has also made inroads into the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Karnataka and Telangana. The only three states untouched by the saffron wave were Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
BJP's vote share in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana was well over 50 percent.
The full results of the elections are expected to be announced late in the night.
