CEO Jack Dorsey said the platform was built on the SMS format of text messaging, which is why the micro-blogging website still does not have the feature of editing

San Francisco: Twitter is mulling over the option of adding support to edit tweets, although the tweet's original version would still be viewable. Chief executive officer (CEO) Jack Dorsey said the platform was built on the SMS format of text messaging, which is why the micro-blogging website still does not have the feature of editing.

"Maybe we introduce a 5-30 seconds delay in the sending of tweet and within that window, you can edit because the issue with going longer than that is it takes that real-time nature of the conversational flow out of it," 9To5Mac quoted Dorsey as saying in a podcast interview.

"Once you send a text, you can't take it back. When you send a tweet, it goes to the world instantaneously. You can't take it back."

Idea was first considered in 2016

Based on the numerous suggestions on Twitter, Dorsey first spoke of the likelihood of adding an edit feature for tweets in December 2016. Dorsey addressed the possible feature in an interview with Joe Rogan last week.

Rogan, during the interview, recommended that Twitter add the feature where a user could edit their tweet. To which, Dorsey responded that the company is looking into "exactly that."

News comes first for Twitter

Moreover, the micro-blogging site was testing a new feature on Android recently that places news stories at the top of the timeline to help users be up to date with new information.
