According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on August 21, Mohapatra, who is presently serving as General Manager at Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), will assume the new role upon taking charge of the post. His tenure will continue until his superannuation on May 31, 2029, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Mohapatra is an accomplished professional in the mining sector with over three decades of experience in Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries. He holds a B. Tech in Mining Engineering from IIT-BHU (1990) and earned his First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency in 1994. Further enhancing his managerial expertise, he completed an MBA in Human Resource Management in 2021.

He began his career at Surakachha Colliery in the Korba Area of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) and subsequently rose through leadership roles as Colliery Manager, Project Officer, Additional General Manager, and Area General Manager across SECL and Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL). Since April 2020, he has been serving as Area General Manager at ECL, where he successfully led operations across four mega mines—Bankola, Sonepur Bazari, Rajmahal, and Jhanjra.

For his outstanding contributions, Mohapatra received the Best Area General Manager Award on Coal India Foundation Day (2020) for his leadership at Bankola, and the Special Contribution Award from CIL for his performance at Rajmahal. His career also reflects strong international engagement—he represented CIL in the Czech Republic in 2017 for exploring collaborations and, in 2023, represented the Ministry of Coal at the African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa.

Mohapatra is widely recognised for his visionary leadership, operational excellence, and commitment to sustainable growth and community welfare in India’s coal sector.

SECL is one of the largest subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), operating in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, and plays a significant role in India’s coal production.
