New Delhi/Chennai: Ashish Chatterjee, a 1999-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, has assumed charge as Principal Secretary and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

Chatterjee brings over 25 years of administrative experience across urban development, governance, finance, energy and the steel sector, with experience in both the state and Central governments.
An IIT alumnus with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chatterjee has served as District Collector of Viluppuram, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. He has also held key positions in urban development and city governance with the Corporation of Chennai.

At the Centre, he served as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, where he was involved in policy formulation and sectoral oversight. During this period, he also served as a government nominee director on the boards of GAIL (India), Indian Oil Corporation and Engineers India.
In April 2025, Chatterjee was appointed Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Ministry of Steel, where he was responsible for financial administration and fiscal matters related to the sector.
His experience in urban governance, public administration, infrastructure, energy and financial management is expected to support his new role at CMRL.
