New Delhi: The Ministry of Power has extended the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN Limited to Bhupender Gupta, CMD of NHPC Limited, for a further period of six months with effect from August 1, 2026.
According to a regulatory filing, the extension will remain effective for six months or until the regular incumbent assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever is earliest.

Gupta has been holding the additional charge of CMD, SJVN since May 1, 2025. He also took charge as CMD of NHPC on September 4, 2025.
He is an electrical engineering graduate and MBA in Operations Management, Gupta has over 34 years of professional experience, including more than 31 years in power sector central public sector undertakings.
He began his career with ACC Ltd in 1991 and joined SJVN in 1995. During his tenure at SJVN, he worked on planning, erection, commissioning and operations and maintenance of electromechanical equipment at the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Power Plant. He also served on deputation in Bhutan on the 1,020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project from 2002 to 2005.

Gupta subsequently joined REC Ltd in March 2007, where he was associated with project financing of hydro and thermal projects. He later served as Additional CEO and operational head at REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd., overseeing execution and project management of power sector projects across India.
He joined the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan as Director (Technical) on deputation in December 2020 and subsequently became Director (Technical) at THDC India Ltd. in June 2023.
At THDCIL, Gupta provided leadership in commissioning the 660 MW Unit-1 of the Khurja Super Thermal Power Project and Units 1 and 2 of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant, each with a capacity of 250 MW.
His experience spans hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission and distribution, covering project planning, design, execution, contract and project management, and operations and maintenance.
As part of his stated vision for the power sector, Gupta has emphasised meeting India's rising electricity demand through non-fossil fuel-based resources while advancing energy security. His focus areas include artificial intelligence, EV-grid integration, cybersecurity and digital protection, green hydrogen, bioenergy and energy storage.
