New Delhi: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) said the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has extended the additional charge of Director (Refineries) entrusted to its Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), Sanjay Khanna. The company disclosed the extension to the stock exchanges on July 30.

The filing was made further to BPCL's earlier intimation of April 16, when Khanna was first given the additional charge.
Khanna's path to the top job runs through the refineries department he now holds additional charge of. Prior to his appointment as BPCL CMD, Khanna was appointed Director (Refineries) of the company on February 23, 2022.
From May 1, 2025, while still Director (Refineries), Khanna took on additional charge of the CMD post. That additional charge was extended from November 1, 2025, under an MoPNG communication dated November 7, 2025. It ran until his substantive appointment: on April 9, the ACC appointed him full-time CMD and he took charge the same day, for a tenure running until his superannuation on May 31, 2029, or until further orders.
His elevation left the Director (Refineries) post vacant, and on April 16 he was given additional charge of it — the reverse of the arrangement he had held a year earlier. The July 30 filing extends that charge.
A chemical engineering graduate of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, and a postgraduate in finance management from the University of Mumbai, Khanna has more than three decades of experience in refinery operations and technical services. Before joining the board, he headed BPCL's Mumbai and Kochi refineries, and as executive director at Kochi, led the commissioning of the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project (PDPP), BPCL's entry into petrochemicals.
Beyond BPCL, Khanna sits on the boards of Bharat Petro Resources Limited, Petronet LNG Limited and Ratnagiri Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, and chairs the Technical Committee for Petroleum Refineries under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
