Dr Hemant Sharad Pande assumes charge as CMD of WCL

Dr Hemant Sharad Pande has assumed charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL)

New Delhi: Dr Hemant Sharad Pande has assumed charge as Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) with effect from May 8. Prior to taking over as CMD, he was serving as Director (Human Resources) at WCL.

Dr Pande brings with him around 37 years of experience in the coal sector, having served in both WCL and South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL). Prior to taking over as CMD, he was serving as Director (Human Resources) at WCL.

An alumnus of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Dr Pande holds a degree in Mining Engineering along with an M. Tech. in Mining, an MBA, and a PhD in Management. He has also undergone Advanced Global Techno-Management training at the European Business School ESCP and participated in study visits across France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Dr Pande started his career with Coal India Limited in 1989 as a Mining Engineer. Over the years, he held several key positions across WCL and SECL. As Area General Manager of SECL’s Raigarh Area and General Manager (Project) at Gevra Area, he led large-scale coal mining projects and played a key role in implementing SILO-based eco-friendly coal dispatch systems, in-pit crushing systems and IT-enabled operational mechanisms.

He also spearheaded the establishment of a solar power unit in Johilla Area and implemented several CSR initiatives during his tenure. In 2022, he received the ‘Best General Manager Award’ from Coal India Limited.

Senior officials of WCL, including Directors, the Chief Vigilance Officer, Heads of Departments and other executives, extended their best wishes to Dr Pande on the occasion.

The company expressed confidence that Dr Pande’s extensive industry experience, leadership capabilities and innovation-driven approach would provide renewed momentum and strategic direction to WCL.
