Govt appoints Rupinder Brar (IRS) as Part-Time Official Director on CIL board

Coal India Ltd (CIL) has announced the appointment of Rupinder Brar (IRS) as a Part-Time Official Director on its Board

New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, has announced the appointment of Rupinder Brar as a Part-Time Official Director on its Board. The appointment, made by the Ministry of Coal via a letter dated January 1, 2025, is effective immediately and will continue until further orders. Presently, she is serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal.

Brar is a distinguished 1990-batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS). She brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, and a Law degree from Mumbai University. An alumna of Hindu College, Delhi, Brar has had a prolific career, holding key positions in taxation and governance.

Before her current role as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, Brar served as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Mumbai and Delhi, where she handled large corporate tax assessments, cross-border taxation, and international tax disputes. She has also been a member of the Dispute Resolution Panel, addressing complex transfer pricing and taxation issues.

From July 2019 to June 2022, Brar served as Additional Director General (ADG) of Tourism in the Ministry of Tourism. During this period, she was a government-nominated director on the Board of Indian Tourism Development Corporation Limited (ITDC) and its subsidiary, Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation Limited.

Currently, Brar is the Nominated Authority for the Ministry of Coal, overseeing coal block auctions. She also holds a directorship at Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, as a government-nominated director.

CIL has confirmed that Brar is not related to any other Director of the company and is not debarred by SEBI or any other authority from holding the position of director.
