"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Power for re-employment of Shri Gurdeep Singh as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), NTPC (India) Limited on contract basis for a period of one year beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. w.e.f. 01.08.2025 till 31.07.2026," a notification by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) said.

Govt to continue scouting for the next NTPC CMD

According to sources who spoke to PSU Watch on the condition of anonymity, Singh has been granted a tenure extension after the government’s efforts to find a suitable successor did not yield a selection. In May, the public sector headhunter, Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) interviewed a dozen candidates but did not find anyone suitable for the position of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC.

Sources added that the government will continue its search for a new CMD even as Singh remains at the helm.
