Ramesh Babu V assumes charge as Director (Operations) of NTPC

Ramesh Babu, who was recommended by the PESB panel, has assumed charge as Director (Operations) of NTPC Limited on Friday

New Delhi: Ramesh Babu V has assumed charge as Director (Operations) of NTPC Limited, a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Power, on Friday. Prior to this assignment, he was serving as Executive Director to the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) and also working on system improvement activities and strategies related to the operational excellence of NTPC power plants. He has been appointed on the post for a period with effect from today i.e. May 1, till the date of his superannuation, i.e. January 31, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He was recommended for the post of Director (Operations) of NTPC Limited, by a PESB panel on October 16, 2019. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister has approved his appointment for the current post in March this year.

Earlier, PSU Watch had reported that Babu was recommended for the post of Director (Operations) of NTPC Limited by a PESB panel. He was selected from a list of five candidates, who were interviewed by the selection panel.

Education & background

Babu has a BTech degree in Mechanical Engineering from Regional Engineering College (REC), Srinagar (Now known as the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar). He also holds an MTech degree in Thermal Engineering from IIT, Delhi which he obtained while serving in NTPC Limited. Babu started his career at Badarpur Thermal Power Station. He joined NTPC in 1987 as 12th Batch Executive Trainee. He has served NTPC in various capacities in the field of Operation, Mechanical Maintenance and Erection etc.

Ramesh Babu has had a long career spanning over 32 years at NTPC Limited. He has wide experience in managing large power stations in the areas of operations & maintenance, renovation & modernisation of old units as well as in the domains of efficiency & systems improvement of thermal plants.

Babu as a professional manager and strategic planner has led several initiatives for improving reliability and efficiency of power stations. His experience in power sector includes Senior Management level exposure as a "Business Unit Head" of NTPC Talcher Kaniha & NSPCL Durgapur.

Current role & responsibility

As Director (Operations) of NTPC Limited, Babu will be responsible for the overall planning of safe, reliable and efficient operations of all power generating stations of the NTPC group while ensuring fuel security and environmental compliance of these power stations.
