Samir Chandra Saxena takes charge as CMD of Grid India

Samir Chandra Saxena has assumed charge as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid-India) on Thursday

New Delhi: Samir Chandra Saxena has assumed charge as the new Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid-India), formerly known as POSOCO, with effect from May 1, 2025. Prior to this, He was serving as Director (Market Operation) in the same organisation. This announcement was made by the power PSU in a social media post on X.

Saxena was recommended for Grid-India's CMD post by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) panel, in its selection meeting held on January 30. He was among three candidates, who were interviewed by PESB panel for the same position.

Saxena is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), Senior Member IEEE and Distinguished Member CIGRE. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University and MBA from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and has also completed a Certificate Course in Regulation of Power Sector from the Florence School of Regulation, Italy.

Saxena has over 30 years of experience in diverse areas comprising of Power Market Operations, Power System Operations, Power Exchange Operations, Electricity Market Design, Regulatory Affairs, Integration of Renewables, REC markets design & operations, and SCADA-IT system and has also served as the head of National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC).

Saxena has been actively associated with the development of the regulatory framework for integration of renewables, implementation & development of Ancillary Services, Fast Response Ancillary Services and Market Based Ancillary Services. He was responsible for the implementation of the Real Time Market (RTM) and Integrated Day Ahead Market (including Green Day Ahead Market). He has been associated with the implementation of Security Constrained Economic Despatch (SCED) at inter-state level in India. He also led a pilot study for intra-state SCED implementation with multiple states.

He has led the team for implementation of the National Open Access Registry (NOAR), a one stop portal for administration of the Short Term Electricity Market in India. In 2023, as head of the National Load Despatch Centre, he has led the implementation of Market Based Ancillary Services and the implementation of IEGC 2023. He has also been associated with the capacity building of Power System Operators and the System Operator Certification Programs.

"As CMD, he will lead the corporation in achieving its strategic objectives, ensuring efficient, secure, and reliable operation of the National Power System, and furthering India’s energy transition goals," company said in its social media post.
