New Delhi: (Power Sector News) SS Barpanda has assumed the charge of Director (Market Operation) of the Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO), a PSU under the Ministry of Power, on Wednesday. Prior to assuming charge as Director (Market Operation) in POSOCO, he was working as Executive Director in Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre of the same organisation. With his new assignment, Barpanda has succeeded PK Agarwal, who superannuated on June 30. According to an order issued on June 8, he has been appointed on the post for a period with effect from July 1, till the date of his superannuation i.e. May 31, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
PSU Watch was the first news organisation to report when Barpanda was recommended for the post of Director (Market Operation) of POSOCO on December 23, 2019. He was selected from a list of six candidates, who were interviewed by the selection panel.
Education & background
Barpanda is an Engineering (Electronics) graduate from Sambalpur University, Sambalpur (Odisha). He joined POSOCO in June 2010 as Deputy General Manager and later and went up the ladder till Executive Director. With almost 34 years of rich and varied experience in Power Sector, he is specialized in handling crucial grid management and market operation functions. Prior to joining the POSOCO, he was working in Powergrid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) since January 1995.

Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) is a wholly-owned government enterprise under the Ministry of Power. Earlier it was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Powergrid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID). The company was formed in March 2009 to handle the power management functions of POWERGRID. POSOCO is responsible for managing the power system operations – a mission-critical activity, with security, economy and reliability. To achieve this, it has adopted a multidisciplinary approach with state of the art technology. It ensures equitable use of transmission infrastructure and has invested significantly in its human capital and towards strengthening the whole power system faculty. It operates the National Load Despatch Centre and the five Regional Load Despatch Centers.
