Sumit Deb appointed as CMD of NMDC Limited

New Delhi: (PSU Appointments) The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Sumit Deb as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of NMDC Limited, a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Steel, on July 20. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Deb has been appointed as CMD of NMDC Limited with effect from the date of his assumption of charge of the post on or after August 1, till the date of his superannuation i.e. February 28, 2023, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. Currently, Baijendra Kumar (IAS) is serving as the CMD but he set to superannuate on July 31. 

Earlier, PSU Watch had reported that Deb was recommended for the post of CMD of NMDC on February 18. He was selected from a list of eight candidates who were interviewed by the PESB selection panel. Currently, Dev is serving as Director (Personnel) in the steel ministry PSU.

As CMD of NMDC Limited, Deb will be the chief executive of the corporation and will be accountable to its board of directors and the government. He also will be responsible for the efficient functioning of the Corporation, and for achieving its corporate objectives and performance parameters.

NMDC Limited

NMDC Limited, previously known as National Mineral Development Corporation, is a state-controlled mineral producer. It is owned 72.43 percent by the government and is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel. It is involved in the exploration of iron ore, copper, rock phosphate, limestone, dolomite, gypsum, bentonite, magnesite, diamond, tin, tungsten, graphite etc. It is India's largest iron ore producer and exporter, producing more than 35 million tons of iron ore from 3 fully mechanised mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. It also operates the only mechanised diamond mine in the country at Panna in Madhya Pradesh.
