Bangalore: State-run Navratna PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) said in a press release that it has bagged an order to deliver more Akash Missiles Systems to the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday. A contract has been signed with the Ministry of Defence for the procurement of seven squadrons of ‘Akash Missile System’ for the IAF. The total value of this contract is Rs 5,357 crores.
This is a turnkey contract with specialist infrastructure. Under this agreement, the company will deliver ready-to-use systems to the Air Force. The delivery of these missiles will be completed in three years. These systems will be commissioned at seven Air Force locations spread across India, the company said.
BEL has also delivered medium-range missile defence system to IAF against the earlier order of the Ministry of Defence in 2015-16.
Akash Missile Systems
Akash is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile defence system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics (BEL). The missile system can target aircraft up to 30 km away and at altitudes of up to 18,000 metres. It has the capability to neutralise aerial targets like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles, as well as ballistic missiles.
How does BEL’s missible system work?
It uses high-energy solid propellant for the booster and ram-rocket propulsion for the sustainer phase. The propulsion system provides a higher level of energy with minimum mass, compared to conventional solid/liquid rocket motor, that has better performance with minimum weight of the missile.

It has dual mode guidance, initially on command mode from a phased array radar and later radar homing guidance with unique software developed for high accuracy.
The phased array radar enables multiple target tracking and simultaneous deployment of missiles to attack four targets at the same time, in each battery. Multiple batteries constitute a group centre. The system is highly mobile and has gone through a number of flight trials providing the command guidance.
