New Delhi: Binay Krushna Mahapatra has assumed charge as Director (Commercial) of KIOCL Limited, a PSU under the Ministry of Steel. Mahapatra is a Graduate in Metallurgical Engineering passed out in First Class with Distinction from the National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Institute of Technology), Jamshedpur in the year 1988 and started his career in the same year with Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) as Management Trainee (Technical) and later joined National Aluminium Company in the year 2016.

Binay Krushna Mahapatra is having over 33 years of experience in the Metal and Mineral Sector, out of which 27 years in Steel Industry and 6 years in Aluminium Industry covering International and Domestic Marketing, Port Handling, Logistics and Plant Operations.

Before joining KIOCL, as the Head of the International Marketing Division of NALCO, due to his strong multi-disciplinary commercial and operational experience, NALCO could achieve the highest ever export sales turnover of Rs 6364 Crores in 2021-22 since inception; the highest ever Alumina Sales Realization of $487 PMT in 2018-19 since inception; the highest ever export of aluminium metal of 1,92,174 MT in 2020-21 since inception.

Share of primary aluminium export by NALCO increased from 1.9% to 8.3% of the total export from India during the period of 2018 to 2021 and also pro-active initiatives were taken to increase Export Market Share to 58% from 42% of Total Sales Turnover of NALCO during COVID-19 period of 2020-21. As the Unit Head of Port Facilities of NALCO at Vizag, he took initiatives for procurement, installation and commissioning of New Shiploader, the capacity of 2500 MT per hour to replace the existing Shiploader with a Capex of Rs 52.24 Crores which is the lifeline for Alumina Export Operations by NALCO. He also took policy initiatives for cashless conversion for the development of Downstream Products by NALCO for an envisaged volume of 50,000 MTPA.

During his stint at RINL from 1988 to 2016, he worked in the marketing, materials and production divisions of the company. As head of the Special Steel Section, he was instrumental in the development and marketing of Value-Added Products like Low Relaxation Pre-stressed Concrete (LRPC), Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforcement (ACSR), Spring Steel, Medium & High Manganese Billets for the TLT Sector, etc. which helped the company to improve the net sales realization (NSR) of its products and also to insulate against pure commodity cycle of the steel market. He was also actively involved in the commissioning, stabilization and production activities of rolling mills during the initial phases of his career.

The new director of KIOCL was the recipient of various awards and accolades during his career. He got the Best Oral Presenter award at the International Conference on Aluminium (INCAL-2019) held in Bhubaneswar. He published articles on the Aluminium Industry in one of the reputed International Journal namely A&L of Italy and also in Aluminum Association of India (AAI) Journals. He was the recipient of the Business Excellence Award for Strategic Marketing in 2012-13 from the Vizagapatnam Chamber of Commerce & Industry (VCCI). He was adjudged the Best Region Award 2013-14 in the capacity of Regional Manager and Best Branch Award in the capacity of Branch Manager for the year 2002-03 & 2006-07 for his marketing skills and performance in RINL.

Mahapatra was the governing council member in the Aluminium Association of India (AAI), and also represented NALCO in the Light metals and their Alloys Sectional Committee, MTD 07 under the Metallurgical Engineering Division Council of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
