New Delhi: PK Purwar has taken over the additional charge of CMD of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), a state-run Navratna PSU under the Department of Telecommunication, with effect from April 15. He is currently serving as CMD of BSNL. This is the third time Purwar has been given charge of CMD of MTNL in the last six years. This information has been shared by the MTNL during a regulatory filing to the stock exchange on April 14.
PK Purwar has taken over the additional charge of CMD of MTNL as Sunil Kumar, Director (HR & EB) has relinquished the additional charge of the post of CMD of MTNL with with effect from April 15. Currently, he Purwar serving as CMD of BSNL
Further, "Sunil Kumar, Director (HR & EB) has relinquished the additional charge of the post of CMD of MTNL with effect from April 15," the company added. This news came at a time when the government is planning to merge both the state-run telecom companies to reduce the debt.
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) is a state-owned telecommunications service provider and a wholly-owned subsidiary of BSNL, headquartered in New Delhi. MTNL provides services in the metro cities of Mumbai and New Delhi in India and in the island nation of Mauritius in Africa. The company had a monopoly in Mumbai and New Delhi until 1992 when the telecom sector was opened to other service providers. The government of India currently holds 57 percent stock in the company with the rest being held by public and institutional investors.
