New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a further one-year extension in the service of T.V. Somanathan, IAS (TN:87), as Cabinet Secretary.

According to an order issued from the Department of Personnel & Traning (DoPT), Somanathan's tenure has been extended beyond August 30, 2026, for a further period of one year.

Somanathan, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, took charge as Cabinet Secretary on August 30, 2024. Before his appointment to the top bureaucratic post, he served as Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Expenditure. He has also held key positions in the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, besides serving as Director, Corporate Affairs at the World Bank in Washington D.C.

Home Secretary Govind Mohan (IAS) gets one-year extension

In the Tamil Nadu Government, Somanathan served as Secretary to the Chief Minister and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation, among other senior positions. As the founding Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation, he was involved in achieving financial closure and awarding the initial tenders for the Chennai Metro project.

Somanathan holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Calcutta and has completed the Executive Development Program at Harvard Business School. He is also a qualified Chartered Accountant, Cost Accountant and Company Secretary.
