Govt approves re-designation of Amit Kumar (IAS) as PS to Sarbananda Sonowal at Director-level

New Delhi: The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has approved the re-designation of the post of Private Secretary to the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, elevating it from Deputy Secretary level to Director level, as a measure personal to the incumbent, Amit Kumar, IAS (Bihar cadre: 2012).

According to an official order, the post of Private Secretary presently held by Amit Kumar at the Deputy Secretary level has been re-designated as Private Secretary at the Director level to the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. The re-designation will take effect from January 1, 2026, or from the date of assumption of charge of the re-designated post, whichever is later.

The approval has been accorded by the competent authority following a proposal forwarded by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The upgraded post will remain in force for a period up to August 20, 2029, or on a co-terminus basis with the Minister, or until Shri Amit Kumar ceases to function as Private Secretary to the Minister, or until further orders, whichever occurs earlier.

The order further noted that Amit Kumar’s central deputation tenure commenced with effect from August 21, 2024.
