New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat (IPS) as Inspector General (IG) of Special Protection Group (SPG). He has been appointed in place of Alok Sharma (IPS), who has been promoted to the post of Additional Director General. According to an order from the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Bhagat has been appointed to the post for a period of one year with effect from February 24 to February 23, 2022, or till a clear vacancy at the IG level is available or until further orders, whichever is the earliest. Bhagat is a 1998-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Gujarat cadre. He is currently serving as Deputy Inspector General in the Group.

The Special Protection Group (SPG) is a special operations force whose objective is providing proximate security to the Prime Minister of India and members of their immediate families anywhere in the world. It was formed in 1988 by an Act of the Parliament of India. It provides security only to the Prime Minister of India and their immediate family members residing with them at the official residence. Earlier, it used to provide security to former prime ministers as well, but they are now given the Z+ security cover.
