

New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Mahesh Dixit (IPS) as the next Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He is a 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre. Currently, he is serving as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau.

According to an order issued from the Department of Personnel & Tranning (DoPT) on June 25, Dixit has been appointed to the post for a tenure of two years from the date of assuming charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

A medical doctor by education, Dixit has more than three decades of experience in intelligence and security operations. Over the years, he has handled several sensitive assignments, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast.
Dixit served as Deputy Director of the Intelligence Bureau in Jammu & Kashmir between 2009 and 2012, a period marked by significant security challenges in the region. Subsequently, he was posted in Nagaland from 2012 to 2015, where he handled intelligence-related responsibilities in the Northeast.
In 2020, he took charge of the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) in Jammu & Kashmir and remained in the position until 2024. During this period, he oversaw intelligence coordination and security preparedness in the Union Territory in the aftermath of the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of the erstwhile state.
He has also served in Bihar and has been involved in several internal security assignments during his career. In recent years, he has been among the senior Home Ministry officials engaged in dialogue with civil society representatives in Ladakh.
