New Delhi: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Parag Jain (IPS) as Secretary of the Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW), the foreign intelligence agency under the Cabinet Secretariat. Jain is a 1989-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Punjab cadre.
According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Jain’s appointment will be for a tenure of two years from the date of assuming charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier. He succeeds Ravi Sinha and assumed charge on Monday for a tenure of two years.
Jain brings extensive experience in intelligence and national security operations, having served in various senior positions across the security establishment. His appointment comes at a crucial time as India continues to expand its strategic footprint and intelligence capabilities globally.
The post of Secretary, R\&AW, is one of the most sensitive and high-profile assignments in the Indian security and intelligence architecture, playing a critical role in safeguarding national interests through foreign intelligence gathering and strategic analysis.
Prior to this appointment, Jain was heading the Aviation Research Centre (ARC), where he played a pivotal role in overseeing intelligence operations. Notably, under his leadership, ARC contributed significantly to ‘Operation Sindoor’ by gathering crucial intelligence on Pakistani armed forces movements.
Over his career, Jain has held several critical assignments, including serving as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Chandigarh. He has also represented India in diplomatic and intelligence roles abroad, with postings in Canada and Sri Lanka.
Jain has extensive field experience in Jammu and Kashmir, where he played an instrumental role in formulating and executing the Centre’s counter-terrorism strategies in the conflict-affected region.
