Sanjay Garg (IAS) takes charge as Director General of Bureau of Indian Standards

New Delhi Sanjay Garg, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1994 batch from the Kerala cadre, has assumed charge as the Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India, with effect from November 1.

Garg brings with him over three decades of extensive administrative experience in strategic planning, policy formulation, and implementation across diverse sectors, including agriculture, food logistics, defence industry, industrial promotion, finance, and various social sectors at both the state and national levels.

Before joining BIS, he served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and as Secretary, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). During his tenure, he led the digital transformation initiatives in research management and administration, notably scaling up the Kisan Sarathi portal, which connects farmers directly with agricultural scientists.

His earlier assignments include management and administration of World Bank projects in India and key roles in promoting and deregulating the defence industry sector, as well as initiatives for industrial promotion, including the leather industry.

As the Director General of BIS, Garg will also serve as the President of India’s national committee in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), steering the nation’s standardisation and quality ecosystem in alignment with global benchmarks.

"In DARE and ICAR, he spearheaded the digital transformation through application of IT in Research Management and Administration. He also played a pivotal role in scaling up and expansion of Kisan Sarathi portal which connects farmers directly to agricultural scientists," the statement said.

The BIS is the National Standards Body of India.
