New Delhi: The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Sonmoni Borah (IAS) as Joint Secretary in the Department of Land Resources under the Ministry of Rural Development. He has been appointed to the post with effect from the date of taking over charge of the post, for a tenure of five years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. With his new assignment, Borah will replace Hukum Singh Meena (IAS).

Borah is a 1999-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre. He earlier held charge of Secretary to the Governor of Chhattisgarh, with additional charge as the Secretary, Department of Labor & Parliamentary Affairs, for the state of Chhattisgarh. He has served as District Magistrate and Collector, for districts of Surguja, Janjgir-Champa, Kabirdham, Raipur and Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh. He was also responsible for UDAAN for the Primitive Tribe Children, an initiative for free English-medium education in Chhattisgarh. 

An HSLC (+2) State Topper of Assam in 1993, Borah is an alumnus of Maxwell School, Syracuse University, JNU & Delhi University. He has also been two time PM Awards winner for the successful implementation of MNREGA. The list of recognition has many national awards on his name including the national award for the Best State for Divyangjan (PwD) welfare & rehabilitation as Secretary of Social Welfare Department.

Borah is also a Census Silver Medallist for his excellent work done during Census 2011 in Bilaspur District of Chhattisgarh.
