New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given a green signal for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department for International Development (Government of United Kingdom) to help Indian Railways become self-sufficient for its energy needs. Both the parties will do energy planning for Indian Railways that includes solar & wind energy sector, adopting energy efficiency practices, enabling fuel efficiency, electric vehicle charging infrastructure deployment, battery-operated Shunting Locomotives.
According to an official release, the programme aims at bringing structural reforms and the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid.
"To be more specific, it aims to achieve more sustainable and inclusive economic growth, better energy security and reduced carbon emissions," the release said.
