New Delhi: A consortium of L&T and IHI Infrastructure Systems (IIS) of Japan has secured an order to supply 28 steel bridges for the bullet train project, also known as the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor. In an official statement released on Friday, L&T said, "The Heavy Civil Infrastructure business of L&T Construction has secured a Significant contract from two packages [P4(X) & P4(Y)] of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor to Procure, Fabricate, Assemble, Paint and Transport 28 bridges – steel truss superstructures with bearings – to various sites that will cross over roads/ rivers/ railway lines and other structures."

Without disclosing the value of the contract, L&T has said that the order falls into the 'significant' category, which means that it is valued between Rs 1,000-2,500 crore, according to the categorisation of contracts at the company. 

NHSRCL signed contract with L&T for construction of viaducts

L&T had previously secured another order for the bullet train project. Earlier in December 2020, National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) had signed a contract agreement for design and construction of 88 km (Approx) of viaducts between Vadodara and Ahmedabad in Gujarat (C-6 package), including construction of elevated HSR station at Anand/Nadiad for Mumbai- Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, with L&T Limited. L&T had secured this mega project from NHSRCL in November 2020 to construct 87.569 km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, popularly referred as the Bullet Train project.

Bullet train project

The approximately 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project or Bullet Train project will cover 155.76 Kms in the state of Maharashtra, 4.3 Kms in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 348.04 Kms in the state of Gujarat with 12 stations along the route. Upon completion, the High-Speed Rail will operate at a speed of 320 Kmph, covering the entire distance in approximately 2 hours with limited stops and in 3 hours with all stops.
