NHPC awards scholarships of Rs 52.64 lakh to upcoming sportspersons

New Delhi: NHPC Limited, under its 'Sports Scholarship scheme for upcoming sportspersons' has announced the awarding of scholarships amounting to Rs 52.64 lakh to 10 promising talented sportspersons covering sporting disciplines of Kabaddi, Football, Boxing, Wrestling and Para sports for the next three years. NHPC's CMD AK Singh handed over the first instalment payments of Rs 1,08,000/- to the meritorious sportspersons at a special function held at NHPC Corporate Office on July 29.

Speaking on the occasion, NHPC's CMD AK Singh said, "NHPC has introduced NHPC sports scholarships for promising young players with a view to encourage talent and create a pool of sportspersons." He further added, "I am sure that the scholarships will help us in nurturing upcoming sportspersons who can bring laurels for the country."  Singh congratulated all the players for receiving the NHPC Sport Scholarships and praised them for their hard work and effort. He also thanked guardians of the players for providing full support and encouragement to their children towards pursuing sports.

NHPC's Director (Projects) Ratish Kumar, Director (Personnel) NK Jain, Director (Finance) MK Mittal, Director (Technical) YK Chaubey and Chief Vigilance Officer AK Srivastava were also present on the occasion. In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held through video conferencing. Out of the selected 10 players, four players were present at the ceremony along with their family members while the remaining six players participated through video conferencing. This is the 2nd batch of selected sportspersons being awarded sports scholarships by NHPC since 2017-18.

Based upon the NHPC Sports policy, the selected players have been placed under 'Elite Scholar' and 'Scholar' categories as per their track record and rankings in their respective sport. The total maximum tenure of the scholarship is of 3 years subject to annual performance review. During this period, the 'Elite Scholar' category players shall receive monthly stipends of Rs 12000/-, Rs 13000/- and Rs 14000/-, while 'Scholar' category players shall receive monthly stipends of Rs 9000/, Rs 10,000/- and Rs 11,000/- during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year respectively. The players selected under individual sports like boxing, wrestling and para-sports will be entitled to an additional amount of Rs 48,000/- for travel, vehicle expenses etc. while taking part in a maximum of 6 all India ranking tournaments. All the players selected under the scheme shall be entitled to yearly kit expenses of Rs 5,000/-.

NHPC has already awarded sports scholarships amounting to Rs 21.24 lakh through instalments under this scheme, since 2017-18.
