Tele-ICU is the use of health information exchanged from a hospital critical care unit to another site via electronic communications. Tele-ICU intensivists can provide real-time services to multiple care centres regardless of their locations. The technology was developed to address the increasing complexity of ICU patients and shortage of intensivists. Tele-ICU as a means to negate the shortcomings in current ICU care is being actively sought after. Tele-ICU is a 24×7 remote ICU patient monitoring system aided by real-time two ways audio-visuals and smart alerts. It is a real blend of medical technology with sophisticated telemedicine to improve ICU care delivery. Tele-ICU provides a solution to scarce ICU resources and shortages of ICU trained manpower.
ICU care is time-sensitive, resource-intensive, costly and is multi-speciality based by its very nature. However, if delivered to the right patient at the right time in the right manner, it can save many precious lives. This futuristic state of art Tele-ICU can help in enhancing public health services in the identified locations and that too at a much lesser cost compared to the private ICUs.
