New Delhi: Public sector engineering giant BEML Ltd has marked a significant milestone in India’s rail manufacturing sector with the rollout of its 2,100th metro coach from its Bengaluru facility. The occasion was commemorated in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, who also handed over the land allotment letter for BEML’s upcoming manufacturing facility in Raisen district, Madhya Pradesh.
The new unit, to be established in Umeria, Raisen, will be spread over 60.063 hectares and will focus on manufacturing rolling stock and metro coaches for both mainline and urban mobility segments. The Madhya Pradesh government, through the Madhya Pradesh Industrial Development Corporation (MPIDC), has facilitated this strategic expansion, which is expected to boost regional industrialisation and generate significant employment opportunities.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav said, “The rollout of BEML’s 2,100th metro coach is a testament to India’s prowess in advanced manufacturing and engineering. With the land allotment for BEML’s new facility, Madhya Pradesh is set to play a pivotal role in supporting the nation’s infrastructure growth and creating inclusive employment opportunities.”
The 2,100th metro coach, designed for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) through the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), meets Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) standards, enabling fully unattended train operations (UTO). It is equipped with cutting-edge safety systems and smart commuter features that align with global benchmarks.
A notable innovation in the trainset is India’s first Onboard Condition Monitoring System. This integrated system includes five advanced modules for real-time monitoring of:
Rail track conditions
Overhead equipment (OHE)
Pantograph-OHE interaction
Arc detection
Rail profile analysis
These systems enable predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics, enhancing operational safety and efficiency.
BEML Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Shantanu Roy stated, “We are honoured to receive support from the Madhya Pradesh government for our expansion plans. The new manufacturing facility will further our mission to provide world-class metro and rail solutions, not only for India but for the global market. The 2,100th coach milestone reflects our sustained commitment to self-reliance, innovation, and infrastructure excellence.”
In addition to its technological capabilities, the new metro coach features a modern commuter-centric design with ergonomic seating, dynamic route maps, CCTV surveillance, digital fire detection, advanced air conditioning, and dedicated cycle stands.
BEML’s metro manufacturing journey began in the early 2000s with the RS1 project for DMRC. Since then, its coaches have become an integral part of urban mobility networks in major cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai. With a continued focus on automation, sustainability, and indigenisation, BEML is positioned as a key enabler of India’s expanding metro infrastructure.
