He managed a workforce of over 2,000 personnel at the unit.

A veteran of the Indian Navy with nearly 22 years of commissioned service, Capt Sunilkumar joined GRSE in September 2016 as Additional General Manager (Materials). He was elevated to General Manager (Cost Estimation & Corporate Planning) in March 2019 and promoted to Chief General Manager in July 2022. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in formulating GRSE’s corporate strategies and business development plans, with a strong emphasis on exports. The company also expanded its global presence, forging strategic partnerships with renowned international shipbuilders like DAMEN (Netherlands) and Naval Group (France).

Capt Sunilkumar was instrumental in setting up the ‘Commercial Shipbuilding’ division at GRSE and has contributed significantly to expanding the company’s order book, which saw a growth of over Rs 10,000 crore. Export orders during his tenure crossed Rs 400 crore. As head of Corporate Planning, he led the development of the company’s long-term roadmap, "Vision 2030," with a strategic objective of achieving Navratna status. He also spearheaded GRSE’s successful re-categorisation as a Schedule ‘A’ company.

An alumnus of the Naval College of Engineering, Capt Sunilkumar holds a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from JNU, New Delhi. He also holds Master’s degrees in Systems & Control Engineering from IIT Bombay and in Defence & Strategic Studies from the University of Madras. Additionally, he is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), a Certified International Supply Chain Professional (CISCP), and holds diplomas in Supply Chain Management and Human Resource Management.

His diverse interests include personal finance, strategy, and motivation, and he has attained Level 3 in Certified Financial Planning (CFP).
