CSL emerges lowest bidder for Indian Navy’s next-generation survey vessel project

New Delhi: Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has been declared the L1 bidder in a tender floated by the Ministry of Defence for the construction of five Next Generation Survey Vessels (NGSV) for the Indian Navy, according to a regulatory filing released on Monday.

The proposed order, estimated at around Rs 5,000 crore, is a significant development for the public sector shipbuilder and reinforces its position in India’s defence shipbuilding ecosystem. The announcement was made following a meeting held at the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi, where the company was identified as the lowest bidder (L1) for the project.

The final award of the contract, however, remains subject to completion of necessary procedural and contractual formalities. The company said further updates will be shared as the process progresses.

The NGSV project is expected to support India’s maritime capability enhancement and aligns with the government’s broader push for indigenous defence manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. If finalised, the contract would add to Cochin Shipyard’s growing defence order book and further strengthen its role in strategic naval shipbuilding programmes.
