New Delhi: Dr SVS Narayana Murty has formally assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) with effect from April 28.

Dr Murty brings with him an illustrious academic and professional background. He holds a B.E. degree from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, an M.E. from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and a Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, all in the field of Metallurgical Engineering.

Beginning his career at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in 1993, Dr Murty worked extensively in the development of ultrahigh strength steels, titanium alloys, superalloys, and aluminium alloys. Between 2003 and 2006, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Steel Research Centre, National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, where he contributed significantly to the development of ultrafine-grained steels.

Prior to joining MIDHANI, Dr Murty was associated with the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Trivandrum. At LPSC, he played a pivotal role in the indigenization and supply of critical materials for earth storable, cryogenic, semi-cryogenic stages, and satellite propulsion systems of the Indian space programme. His areas of expertise span aerospace materials development, processing, testing, characterization, failure analysis of aerospace components, and additive manufacturing.

Throughout his career, Dr Murty has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Young Metallurgist Award (2001) and the Metallurgist of the Year Award (2018) from the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. He was part of the ISRO team that won the Team Excellence Award in 2012 for the indigenization of copper alloy thrust chambers for cryogenic and semi-cryogenic engines. His research excellence was also recognized internationally with the AIDA Technology Innovation Award by the Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity in 2009.

Dr Murty’s contributions have been further honored with the National Failure Analyst Award (2021) by the Society for Failure Analysis and the G.D. Birla Gold Medal (2022) by the Indian Institute of Metals. He is an elected Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences and the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

In addition to his leadership roles, Dr Murty serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals, published by Springer, and sits on several editorial boards, including the ASTM Journal of Materials Performance and Characterization and the Journal of Engineering Failure Analysis. He is also a member of the American Society for Metals (ASM) Handbook Committee.

With a rich legacy of supervising doctoral and master's research, authoring more than 325 publications in international journals, and being listed among the top 2 percent of scientists globally by Stanford University, Dr Murty is widely recognized as a leading figure in the field of metallurgical engineering.
