New Delhi: The Indian Navy has inducted INS Nirdeshak, the second ship under the Survey Vessel (Large) project, in a ceremony at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam. The event, presided over by Raksha Rajya Mantri (RRM) Sanjay Seth, marks a significant milestone in India's maritime capabilities. Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command, hosted the ceremony.
INS Nirdeshak, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, is the second of four ships in the Survey Vessel (Large) project. The vessel is designed for hydrographic surveys, navigation assistance, and supporting maritime operations. The ship’s advanced features and indigenous construction highlight India's focus on self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Addressing the gathering, Seth emphasized the critical role of survey vessels in maritime operations. “Highly specialized ships like these enable accurate oceanic data collection and processing, ensuring reliable charts that enhance maritime safety and operations,” he said. He also highlighted the vessels' potential as tools of maritime diplomacy, strengthening bilateral ties and promoting trade opportunities by aiding friendly nations in hydrographic missions.
Built with over 80 percent indigenous content, INS Nirdeshak is equipped with cutting-edge hydrographic systems, including Multi-Beam Echo Sounders, Side Scan Sonars, Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV), and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV). These systems enable precise mapping, enhance survey capabilities in restricted zones, and expedite data collection for wreck identification and environmental studies.
The ship’s advanced capabilities align with India's SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) initiative, promoting regional security and maritime collaboration. By sharing maritime data with friendly nations, INS Nirdeshak contributes to India’s leadership in regional peacekeeping and scientific exploration.
The ship’s construction represents a collaborative effort involving the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, GRSE, Larsen & Toubro, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), and numerous Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This partnership exemplifies India’s commitment to fostering self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
INS Nirdeshak’s induction strengthens the Indian Navy’s hydrographic capabilities, contributing to safer navigation and effective maritime operations in the Indian Ocean Region. The vessel’s dual role in scientific research and security bolsters India’s maritime leadership and supports environmental health.
