GRSE launches second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel ‘Shruti’ for Indian Navy

New Delhi: The defence shipbuilder Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) has launched ‘Shruti’, the second Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) on Tuesday. This ship is being built by GRSE for the Indian Navy as part of the Indian Navy's 11-ship NGOPV programme.

The launch comes less than three months after GRSE launched ‘Sanghmitra’, the first NGOPV, on May 20. The Kolkata-based shipyard is constructing four of the 11 NGOPVs under the Navy’s programme.

‘Shruti’ has formally launched by Manika Sadhu, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition (CWP&A), Indian Navy, in the presence of Vice Admiral Sadhu as the chief guest. The ceremony was conducted with traditional rituals and chanting of Vedic shlokas

GRSE Chairman and Managing Director Cmde PR Hari, Director (Shipbuilding) Cdr Shantanu Bose, Director (Corporate Planning & Personnel) Capt P Sunilkumar, Director (Finance) Niranjan Bhalerao, Chief Vigilance Officer Abhishek Ranjan and senior officials from the Indian Navy and GRSE were also present.

According to GRSE, the NGOPVs are designed to offer greater endurance, firepower and operational flexibility compared with earlier Offshore Patrol Vessels. The vessels are approximately 113 metres long and 14.6 metres wide, with a displacement of around 3,000 tonnes. They are designed to attain a maximum speed of 23 knots and have an endurance of about 8,500 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 14 knots.

The vessels will be deployed for a wide range of maritime missions, including coastal and offshore asset protection, maritime interdiction, surveillance, visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS), mine warfare and special operations. Their roles will also include anti-piracy, counter-infiltration, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, search and rescue, Out of Area Contingency Operations, and specialised hospital, communications intelligence (COMINT) and fleet maintenance support.

Speaking at the launch, Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu said GRSE has played a significant role in the development of India’s indigenous warship-building capabilities. He noted that the shipyard delivered INS Ajay in 1961, the first indigenously built platform, and has since delivered more than 110 warships to the Indian Navy.

He also highlighted GRSE’s broader shipbuilding record, noting that the shipyard has built more than 800 ships and platforms for the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, export customers and other countries. GRSE was accorded Navratna status in June 2026.

GRSE CMD Cmde PR Hari said the NGOPVs are significantly larger and more capable than the Sukanya-class and Saryu-class Offshore Patrol Vessels, with longer endurance, advanced equipment and sensors, and enhanced weapon systems.

He said GRSE delivered eight warships and launched one warship during the previous year, while the shipyard plans to deliver five warships and launch four vessels during the current year.

The launch of ‘Shruti’ underscores GRSE’s focus on expanding its warship-building capacity and strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing in line with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
