New Delhi/Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) on Monday marked a key milestone in its export programme by laying the keel for the third vessel under its Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) project for Germany-based Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler and Reederei GmbH & Co. KG.
The MPV contract, considered the largest such order in GRSE’s history, marks the company’s strategy to diversify its portfolio and expand its international footprint. The project initially began with an order for four vessels in June 2024, which was subsequently expanded to a total of 12 vessels, including hybrid propulsion ships under agreements signed in September 2025.
The vessels are being built under the CORAL 7500 DWT MPV series, jointly developed by GRSE and its German partner. Each vessel will measure 120 metres in length, with a beam of 17 metres and a draught of 5.85 metres. Designed for versatility, the ships will have a cargo capacity of 7,500 metric tonnes and feature a large cargo hold suitable for bulk, general, and project cargo.
Additionally, the vessels will be capable of carrying containers on hatch covers and transporting large windmill blades on deck, enhancing operational flexibility.
The project is being executed in collaboration with global maritime firms including F.H. Bertling, ForestWave Navigation/Schulte & Bruns, and Delft Shipping, with technical design support from SEDS. The vessels will be certified by DNV.
The keel-laying ceremony was attended by senior GRSE officials, including Executive Director (Commercial Shipbuilding & SCM) M. Venkatesh Murthy and Executive Director (TS & YEM) Cmde Rajat Manchanda (Retd.), along with representatives from the German client and classification society.
