New Delhi: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a leading defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has signed a significant contract for the major refit of Lightship ‘Indira Point’, marking another milestone in its shipbuilding and repair portfolio.
The contract was formally signed on May 21, between Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and N Muruganandam, Director General, Lighthouses and Lightships, at a ceremony held to commemorate the partnership.
As per the agreement, GRSE will undertake comprehensive dry dock and afloat repairs of the lightship. The scope of work includes critical maintenance of the vessel’s hull, propulsion systems, onboard equipment, and essential machinery. The refit is expected to be completed within 300 days.
Lightship MV Indira Point plays a vital role in maintaining lighthouses and navigational aids along the Indian coastline. Positioned at the southernmost tip of India, Indira Point, the lightship functions as a floating beacon and contributes significantly to maritime safety, trade facilitation, and coastal security.
The contract reflects the government's continued focus on strengthening maritime infrastructure and ensuring the reliability of navigational assets. It also highlights GRSE’s expertise in executing complex refit projects, further enhancing its presence in the non-defence maritime sector.
With a strong legacy of supporting the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and other maritime agencies, GRSE is steadily expanding its footprint beyond traditional defence contracts, leveraging its technical capabilities to serve diverse segments of the maritime industry.
