New Delhi: Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) in a competitive tender floated by the Indian Coast Guard for the construction of 18 Next Generation Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), with the estimated contract value pegged at around Rs 3,000 crore.

The tender witnessed participation from six shipyards, indicating strong industry interest. Following a detailed technical and commercial evaluation, HSL’s bid was adjudged the most competitive, positioning the PSU for a major order in the defence shipbuilding segment. The formal contract is expected to be signed in the coming months.

The vessels will be indigenously designed and constructed in line with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the broader push for self-reliance in defence shipbuilding. As per the project timeline, the first FPV is scheduled to be delivered within 30 months from the date of contract signing, with subsequent vessels to be delivered at an interval of four months.

The Next Generation FPVs are medium-range, weapon-fitted surface vessels designed for operations in Indian waters and around island territories, in depths exceeding five metres. Equipped with helo staging-through capability and optimised for tropical conditions, the vessels will support a wide spectrum of missions, including fisheries protection, exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and coastal patrol, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations, search and rescue, and interception of suspect vessels.

They will also facilitate day-and-night staging and fuelling operations for ALH Mk III helicopters and provide assistance to ships and crews in distress. The project win marks a significant milestone for HSL and further reinforces its growing capabilities in indigenous defence shipbuilding and patrol vessel construction.
