Mahendragiri is the fourth ship of the Project 17A class built at MDL and represents a significant advancement in indigenous naval capabilities. Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), the vessel reflects a generational leap in stealth, survivability, combat capability and automation.
Project 17A frigates are multi-mission platforms equipped to address evolving maritime challenges. The ships feature advanced weapon and sensor suites with enhanced capabilities over the earlier Shivalik-class (P17) frigates, covering anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare operations.
The platform is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, integrating diesel engines and gas turbines driving controllable pitch propellers, along with a state-of-the-art Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), ensuring superior operational efficiency and performance.
Built under the philosophy of integrated construction, Mahendragiri was delivered within the envisaged timelines. Notably, it is the sixth P17A ship delivered to the Indian Navy within a span of less than 17 months since the delivery of the first ship, ‘Nilgiri’, in December 2024.

With an indigenous content of approximately 75 percent, the project has significantly contributed to the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. It has involved more than 200 MSMEs and generated employment for around 4,000 personnel directly and over 10,000 indirectly.
The delivery of Mahendragiri underscores MDL’s shipbuilding and engineering capabilities, while reinforcing the Indian Navy’s continued focus on indigenisation and strengthening of domestic defence manufacturing.
